Forget the stale danish and watery orange juice

Oh my, how American chain motels have abused the notion of a “continental breakfast.” This is your average continental breakfast on the continent (my enthusiasm may seem more than a little “over the top” for a simple meal and food, but I enjoyed them immensely at each place). These pictures are from the hotel in Munich, but the breakfasts in Bern and at the Abby in Neuchatel were similar.

Start with several different kinds of fresh bread and rolls and bowls of delicious jams (apricot and most every kind of berry) and real butter (not margarine); at least two types of soft cheese;  orange juice, milk (whole milk!) and water; slices of cheese, tomatoes, cold cuts (and even some cabbage) for a kind of breakfast salad or sandwhich.

Move on to the cereals: muesli and some corn flakes (and notice in the back some chocolate covered flakes - didn’t I mention something about Germans and chocolate)

But here’s what is really cool: They have these little jars of rye, wheat, a mix of nine different kinds of grain and some other grain I didn’t recognize and a little grinder so you can freshly grind some into flakes. I tried it. It was good (but I made a bit of a mess).

Then move over to the yogurt, in big bowls, both plain and berry flavored (and not the low fat stuff we get in the little plastic containers). Behind the yogurt are jars of coconut shavings, nuts and other things, and on top are grains from an organic farm (to promote what they call “bio” foods). There are, of course, the fresh juices and oranges, apples, dates and other fruit.

And finally, you contentedly eat all this while listening to Adele, Mana or CCR playing in the background (seriously). [It is a truth. Europe may have faster trains, better bathrooms and healthier breakfasts, but American music pretty much rules the world. I suppose it is a matter of setting priorities.]
