The "chapel"

The Abby originally had a little chapel, but it was destroyed by the Protestant "Reformists". So they now use the old wine cellar as a chapel and place for mediation and worship. There are essentially two rooms, one separated by a small entrance that at one time was for storing wine barrels. There is some irony, here, as these two small rooms in the basement of Abby may get about as much use for worship as the large cathedrals in town and, although a Catholic order, the "chapel" seems to reflect the Protestant Reformist view on plainness in interior furnishings.

 

 

    EVIE'S Comments:  You will notice a very Jewish Menorah.  I had the impression that this wasn't a completely "Catholic" place, but had elements of accepting various doctrines and techniques that promote a "spiritual life".  We enjoyed visiting with a woman during our meals at the Abby.  She had come there for a workshop or seminar on meditation (I'm not sure what kind.)  She just mentioned that it was fairly rigorous and demanding.  They were also promoting lots of organic products, including lotions and various teas, and massage therapy and reflexology.
